    “I have a psychic: I am entertained – and much more!*”

    Vol. 1,  No. 16, September 26th, 2010

    TITLE: “I have a psychic: I am entertained-and much more!*”

    My book of the week is: “Psychic Healing: Using the Tools of a Medium to Cure Whatever Ails You” [Hardcover] by Sylvia Browns. Hence the topic is psychics.

    “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”

    For today, my word is “psychic”; and my phrases are “sixth sense” and “Tarot cards”. Here is everything that you wanted to know about such, perhaps more, but were afraid to ask.
    Psychic

    It’s origin is from “the Greek ψυχικός psychikos—”of the mind, mental”, also called sensitive[1]) is a person who professes an ability to perceive information hidden from the normal senses through extrasensory perception (ESP), or is said by others to have such abilities”  (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychic – CachedSimilar).

    Sixth sense

    It is “the colloquial term for the faculties of ‘extra-sensory perception’ (ESP). Sixth sense is the ability to receive or send information beyond the realm of the five canonical senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well known to science (balance, proprioception, etc)…This term was coined by German researcher Dr. Rudolf Tischner whose book “Telepathy and Clairvoyance” was written in German in 1920 and published in English in 1925”(Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra-sensory_perception )

    Mention is made of the American researcher Joseph Banks Rhine. “He is considered the father of serious scientific research into the paranormal. In the 1930’s at Duke University Durham, North Carolina, USA. He defined this sixth sense as ‘Extra Sensory Perception’” or otherwise said, ESP, which is subdivided into four basic abilities: “(a) TELEPATHY: the ability to ‘tune in’ to the thoughts of others, or to inject your own thoughts into another’s mind; (b) CLAIRVOYANCE: the power to see things that aren’t available to you by the known senses and which aren’t known by anyone else; (c) PRECOGNITION: the skill of looking into the future and seeing events before they take place, often through the subconscious when dreaming; and (d) PSYCHOKINESIS: the ability to use the power of the mind to influence matter- to move objects by thought.”

    Tarot cards

    “The tarot (first known as tarocchi, also tarock and similar names), pronounced /ˈtæroʊ/, is a pack of cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways” (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot).

    STUDY/STATISTICS

    “In 1988 the U.S. National Academy of Sciences gave a report on the subject that concluded    there is “no scientific justification from research conducted over a period of 130 years for the existence of parapsychological phenomena.”[8]“” (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychic – Cached – Similar)

    Nevertheless, I believe to the contrary in the instance of my psychic.

    S & R* NEWS ALERT*

    In the news lately, there has been some talk of a psychic in a broad sense. During the 2010 FIFA football (soccer) championship in South Africa, people everywhere were speaking of Paul the Octopus as if it was a Vegas sports handicapper. (N.B. Paul the Octopus (reportedly hatched January 2008) is a common octopus living in a tank at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, despite reportedly originally being from Weymouth in England.[1]Paul became internationally famous for correctly “predicting” the winner of Germany’s seven matches at the 2010 World Cup, as well as the final (Source:  Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). A typical headline was as follows.

    “It’s time to make your bets. The octopus has spoken, sort of. Paul, the German celebrity cephalopod, has predicted a Spanish victory over the Netherlands in Sunday’s World Cup Final. In front of a swarm of TV cameras, the two-year-old octopus took only three minutes to retrieve food from a tank with a Spanish flag on it, neglecting the tank with Dutch flag. This bodes well for the Spaniards’ chances. Paul’s record for predicting  the outcome of international soccer matches stands at 10 to 1.” (Source: National Post) Read more: http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/07/09/paul-the-octopus-predicts-world-cup-glory-for-spain/#ixzz10a2Ul0PI

    MY LIFE & TIMES*

    How I found my psychic

    In the media, I had heard the mention of psychics, but I did not know much about them. I wasn’t very interested until one day about 30 years ago, when I was at my esthetician’s shop.  Would you believe, while getting my legs waxed, she told me about a certain lady with a gift – her psychic, recounting several of her predictions, some of which came true.  Although I was very skeptical, I was impressed by my esthetician’s passionate credence in the psychic’s ability. I admit it: I was also very intrigued – I wanted to go.  I made an appointment and went a few weeks later. I was astonished by what she told me. She was dead on about the past and the present. The future, however, remained to be seen.  As time went on, I began to realize that she was accurate about many of her predictions. Yes Virginia, I have been going to her for over 30 years. I do know; maybe it was because I was the oldest/first born, but my three brothers also started going to her. And many of my friends followed me and swear about the gift of our psychic.

    THE AUTHOR: Sylvia Browns
    Sylvie Browns calls herself one of the few deep-trance mediums. She bills herself as a world-renowned spiritual teacher, psychic, author, lecturer and researcher in the field of parapsychology. According to her bio, “Sylvia manifested her psychic ability at the age of three, in her home town of Kansas City, MO. For many years she shared her gift with friends and family, and became very well known for helping people to see their future.” She is a prolific author.

    SERIES/COLLECTION

    Some of her books are:

    – Contacting your Spirit Guide by Sylvia Browne

    – Psychic: My Life in Two Worlds by Sylvia Browne

    – Messages from Spirit An Open-At-Random Book of Guidance by Sylvia Browne

    THE BOOK: “Psychic Healing: Using the Tools of a Medium to Cure Whatever Ails You”.

    It is about self-healing. It is especially for those suffering from chronic physical problems, but can’t seem to find relief from conventional medicine. She is careful to position her work and counsel not in replacement of medical care, but as a second level approach towards the wellness promised land. It is simply written. The first part is How-To, while part two is a question and answer piece.  You never know, if……

    CONCLUSION

    Why I go to my psychic

    Although I believe on the one hand, that no one knows our future except for God, I also believe that there are gifted people who have a sixth sense. (N.B. Why not? Does anyone know for certain otherwise? To my own question, I answer no one.) First, I like seeing my psychic because she is not a phony – I am convinced that she has the gift.  In addition, she is a source of time spent not being boring, but rather, interesting and pleasing. Furthermore, even if she has bad news, she will word the same in such a way that I will not recognize the downer until it actually happens.

    The point

    But more than this, my psychic brings me up when I am down. She gives me hope, (not always), that something desired will eventually happen. It is especially helpful when I have been praying for it and nothing seems to be happening. (N.B. Hope is defined as a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstancesin one’s life.[1] (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychic – Cached – Similar).  Indeed, hope is a very powerful thing as it helps makes dream happen!*

    Take it out for a spin and tell me if you agree.

    And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours? *

    “Divorce (Part #1): I say, “Watch out for our kids!”*

    Vol. 1,  No. 15, September 20th, 2010

    TITLE:  “Divorce  (Part #1): I say, ” Watch out for our kids!”*

    “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”

    My word of today is “divorce.” The first three letters are the same as those in the words, “divide” and “division”. When such happens, this entails loss. It is defined as: ” divorce: n. the legal dissolution of a marriage contract; separation; v.t. to obtain legal dissolution of a marriage; to separate; to sever; to disunite (Source: Webster’s Dictionary Edited by John Gage Allee, Ph.D). Now that’s a witch’s brew if I ever saw one. What a dreadful sounding word. But the numbers are worse than the sound.

    STUDY/STATISTICS

    Here are some stats:

    “In 2008, 46% of all marriages involve a remarriage for one or both spouses. It is estimated that 40% of all marriages have ended in divorce as of 2008.[15] On average, first marriages that end in divorce last about eight years.[16] Of the first marriages for women from 1955 to 1959, about 79 percent marked their 15th anniversary, compared with only 57 percent for women who married for the first time from 1985 to 1989.[16] The median time between divorce and a second marriage was about three and a half years[16]” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia).  But the numbers are still not the whole story. It could be unpleasant.  This may be the understatement of the year. Divorce could be profoundly awful; and believe it or not,  even get ugly. If a denier, with strong stomach, please read on.

    S & R* NEWS ALERT*

    MY LIFE & TIMES*

    Like many before me, I never thought it would happen to me. It took a while before my misfortune became clear. I was adrift and the sense of sadness seemed overpowering. I filed for a divorce. I was fortunate in having a support system: loving family and close friends – mostly new as the old ones had difficulty in continuing. I did not look to the big picture. Instead, I focused on the next step. I then proceeded to rebuild a life.

    But enough about me. Like other parents in this situation, I was preoccupied about my kids. It has been said that the children are the ones that suffer the most when a couple divorces. That’s why this week’s book struck me as so important. It is: “The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions so You and Your Children Can Thrive” [Hardcover]  by Robert E. Emery Ph.D.

    THE AUTHOR: Robert E. Emery Ph.D.

    He is a Professor, Director of Center for Children, Families, and the Law in the Psychology department at the University of Virginia. His areas are clinical and developmental.

    SERIES/COLLECTION

    Several of his learned pieces are as follows.

    • Emery, R.E. (2006). The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive. New York: Plume.
    • Emery, R.E., Otto, R.K., & O’Donohue, W. (2005). A Critical Assessment of Child Custody Evaluations: Limited Science and a Flawed System. Psychological Science in the Public Interest, 6 (1).

    THE BOOK:”The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions so You and Your Children Can Thrive” [Hardcover]

    Professor Emery has seen it all. He gets real. He sees  beyond the mere platitudes of parents such as: “I don’t want the kids to get hurt.” Of course, as the ex-spouses battle on, this is precisely what happens: children are traumatized and scarred. He speaks neutral common sense and his recommendations are a road map to a good divorce and happier times for the kids.

    CONCLUSION

    You probably guessed it. I have an opinion. Sorry, but here she comes!

    The point

    I know of what I speak: …been there… done that. I suggest that, when divorcing, both parents should:

    1.     Try to do things amicably;

    2.     Strive to be fair with each other. Why- do you ask?:

    a.      It will be less stressful for you;

    b.     It will make it easier for the children to accept the parental split; and

    c.     On a financial note, lawyers’ fees will be more limited.

    3.     Do NOT use the kids as ammunition – this is really NOT good!

    4.     Do everything to faciliate the lives of the kids -this is really VERY good!

    Take it out for a spin and tell me if you agree.

    And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours? *

    “On 9/11, I remember, support, pay homage; I also believe and have faith!*”

    Vol. 1,  No. 14, September 12th, 2010

    TITLE:  “On 9/11, I remember, support, pay homage; I also believe and have faith!*”
    MY LIFE & TIMES*
    This weekend, on the anniversary of 9/11, I got to thinking about that fateful day. I would like to share with you some of my experiences and thoughts.
    Since I start work at 8:00 a.m., I was in the office when I first heard the bulletin. I will always remember that moment. It is one of the significant days of my generation. In the instance of the deaths of Pres. J.F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Dr. King, etc. and the walk on the moon by Astronaut Neil Armstrong and the fall of Saigon, I was younger and not quite part of the adult world. But with 9/11, I was of age and I had to deal with it.
    It was approximately 10:00 a.m. when people were slowly trickling into my work space to discuss the tragedy. I could not quite believe it. I kept thinking that the TV pictures were from a horror movie not the news channel. When I kind of digested what had happened, it kept getting worse. I desperately wanted it to stop. Like everyone, I did not then know, how it would escalate and play out. It marked me along with the entire world.
    STATISTICS/STUDY
    Here are some stats:

    Overall

    *The victims numbered about 3,000;

    * There were 19 hijackers who died;

    World Trade Center

    * There were 2,752 victims of which there were: (a) 343 firefighters; (b) 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority; (As per  the New York State Health Department, 836 responders died as of June 2009.)

    * Most were civilians, including nationals from more than 70 nations;

    * People in the 100s were killed instantly upon the planes crashing into the the towers, while many of the others were trapped and died after the buildings collapsed.

    * About 200 +- jumped to their deaths;

    * There was one secondary death, from lung disease due to dust from the building collapse;

    Pentagon

    * At Pentagon, there were 184 people who died. (Source: Commission Report, Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, etc.)

    THE AUTHOR: 9/11 Commission

    The 9/11 Commission – its formal name is the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States. It was established on November 27, 2002. Its mandate was: “to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks, including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks” (Source Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
    SERIES/COLLECTION
    There are many books on topic; as for example, notably:
    1.  New Pearl Harbour” by David Ray Griffin;
    2.   The 911 Commission Report Omissions and Distortions” by David Griffin;
    3. “Crossing the Rubicon” by Michael C Ruppert;
    5. “Towers of Deception” by Barrie Zwicker;
    (N.B. These books are enumerated for your information – I am not recommending them and I do not necessarily subscribe to their conclusions.)
    THE BOOK: Commission Report 911 by Commission National (Hardcover – Aug 30 2004)
    It is a comprehensive document, fact-filled narrative of the real story, step-by-step, playing out in several locations involving many people. It is both heart-breaking from the immense tragedy and uplifting due to the heroic acts of ordinary folks meeting the challenges and becoming shining stars of the righteous. Read and endure, but also rise to the heavens. It is an impressive read, which will surely move you. You will finish it with an opinion of what was good and what was deficient in the U.S. response.
    CONCLUSION
    The 9/11 tragedy affected all of us emotionally. For me, I felt numb because of the innocent people at work killed for no reason. I also felt fear. But in the end, I felt hope out of courage.

    The point

    It was a horrible event. I will not deal with the policies – I will leave that to the governments. I will not deal with the politics – I will leave that to the politicians. I will not deal with the issues of the military – I will leave that to the top brass and the officer corp. But I will deal with the human side.

    1. First, people perished that day – I remember and will never forget. I also acknowledge the tours of duty served and the supreme sacrifice of brave American, Canadian and other NATO soldiers in Afghanistan. etc., and I affirm my heartfelt gratitude and support.

    2. Second, families lost loved ones – I extend my deepest sympathy and express my personal wish to stand with them to provide never-ending succor.

    3. Third, there were heroes – I pay homage to these brave people.

    4. Fourth, because of an appointment or a stop at a grocery store or  just missing the bus, arrivals were delayed until after the tragedy had started; and as a result, lives were incredibly spared. When I heard some of the stories that were revealed later, it confirmed my belief in destiny – I believe.

    5. Finally, I encourage each and every person who survived 9/11 to extend a courtesy to one another regardless, of nationality, creed, religion, etc. – I have faith that, someday, the world shall overcome the cause of 9/11 and we all shall live in harmony.

    Take it out for a spin and tell me if you agree.

    And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours? *

    “I am SO proud of Generation X as adults/parents*”

    Vol. 1,  No. 13, September 6th, 2010

    TITLE:  “I am SO proud of Generation X as adults/parents*”

    MY LIFE & TIMES*

    My audio book product this week is: “Many Ways To Say I Love You [Audiobook] [Audio CD]” by Fred Rogers. I also recently heard of a study about parental strictness/leniency:

    “Canadian teenagers enjoy more freedom than French and Italian peers, according to a new study published in the Journal of Adolescence. The investigation, which examined how parents fashion emotional bonds and exert behavioural control with adolescents, was led by scientists from the University of Montreal, the Université de Rennes in France and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy.” The findings were to the effect that Italians were strict, French moderate and Canadians lenient. (Source: Science Daily, Aug. 30, 2010)

    This got me thinking about my personal experiences as a child and also those as a mother. It also got me thinking about my children who are now adults and/or parents. They are part of  Generation X, which was born between 1961 and 1981.
    Each generation has its time and way. My parents were from the old country. In my family, my mother, the primary child-rearing parent, was loving, but very strict, especially with me as the girl. My childhood was much different from that of my mother. Being Canadian-born and a Baby Boomer, I grew up with TV; and kid shows were mostly cartoons and fluff.
    I had the advantage of increased knowledge in medicine, etc. However, when it was my turn as a new mother, even with a TV,  telephone  and books, I could not get much information on demand.  While I had a pediatrician and girlfriends, I was pretty much on my own -I found my very own parenting style. First and foremost, I drew from my Mother – I had comparable values. I also benefitted from  improvements in children’s programming. I had the resource of educational shows such as “Sesame Street”, “Mr. Drsss-up”, etc. “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was one of the best.  Later, when raising my daughters, I was a working /soccer Mom.  While I insisted upon what’s right and proper, I was somewhat more lenient than my mother had been.
    When it comes to my adult daughters, they start with being caring of people in general and fond of and nurturing to children in particular. During this, the family period of their generation, we know even more about health, diet/nutrition, learning, etc. In addition, the current generation parents are improved because of technology.   In a very real sense, the world has changed. No longer in the TV age, we have passed through the (computer) information age to the specialty channel age together with Internet/cell-phones. New mothers are not isolated, but instead, connected and more informed.  I am very proud of the way my eldest daughter, a grade-school teacher, is raising my little granddaughter.

    THE AUTHOR

    Fred McFeely Rogers was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. on March 20, 1928. He was the host of the VERY popular young children’s show, titled, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”. It focused on a child’s locality and his or her neighbours.Teaching was happening, but it was VERY low key. The show was launched in Pittsburgh in 1967. It was picked up by PBS in a year, becoming a huge hit. Rogers had several trademarks: soft voice, mild manner and cardigan sweaters. Production ended in 2001 and is still available in reruns. He died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (from stomach cancer) on February 27, 2003.

    CONCLUSION

    The point

    When it come to child- bearing and child- rearing, Baby Boomers have passed the baton to Generation X. To the question, “How did the Baby Boomers do as parents?” I answer: “Very well thank you…look at these fine young adults. ” However, I do have some words of advice.

    Antoinette’s Parenting Suggestions

    1. Start with love; and love unconditionally;

    2. Pay attention to children, never leave them unattended …not even for a second;

    3. Learn to say “No”, as boundaries spell love and use discipline responsibly to teach the notion of consequences; and it is never too early as the ‘time out corner’ can be a teaching tool even with young children;

    4. Give your child much thought and ask such questions as: (a) “Who is he or she?” (b) “What is his or her character?” (c) “What are his or her talents?” Feed the particular needs and gifts of each child. But as a parent, if you think it beneficial, regardless of the child’s wishes, it is OK to give them music lessons or Saturday morning extra school.

    5. Be an example, not by saying, but by showing: Be a good person with good qualities and instill the same in young people.

    Antoinette’s Grand-Parenting Rules

    1. Be good grandparents; to this end,

    (a) Understand that your adult children are the parents and abstain from offering directions;

    (b) Advise when asked; etc.

    2. Keep your eyes open; and intervene, if and when, the child is at risk;

    Speaking for Baby Boomers everywhere, I say to the adults from Generation X, “I am so proud of you as people and also, I compliment you over your kids -our precious grand-kids of today and tomorrow. Thank you in advance.”

    Take it out for a spin and tell me if you agree.

    And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours? *

    SAVE & READ* S & R* NEWS*

    Dear Readers,

    Greetings from Cyberspace.

    This week, I am addressing Fred Rogers and his audio book product, entitled, “Many Ways To Say I Love You” [Audiobook] [Audio CD]. But I  decided to add another book in this review, notably “The Merck Manual – – Third Home Edition” by Robert Porter M.D., Editor.
    Why, do you ask?  The answer is that two is better than one. I also think that they fit well together. I hope that you will agree.
    That’s all for now.
    Have a great week.
    Yours truly,
    Antoinette
