TITLE: “ANTOINETTE’S EXPRESS BLOG (It’s short and sweet): Seniors Day – at a residence or not, with a job or not, dating or needing resources, I am celebrating for every senior, so should you!*”

INTRODUCTION

This past week, I picked up a supermarket flyer; and it shouted that they were having special prices for SENIORS DAY on January 31st, 2013. I didn’t realize that it was now – I wanted to do a piece on this special day for these very special people.

So I quickly did a search, but I discovered that in Canada, we had a National Seniors Day, but it was on October 1st. I also found that in the USA, it is to recognize university students on a sport team graduating in the current year. I laughed. I said what the heck, I would hold my very own seniors day – I’ll call it ANTOINETTE’S SENIORS DAY. (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on seniors. We are introducing an abbreviated blog format. Hope you like it!)

ANTOINETTE’S LIFE & TIMES*

I would think that no one wants to be considered a senior. However, a woman, 55, in my office, would take advantage of the “Senior Discount” and brag about it.  It never occurred to me to do so.

Oh , by the way, a friend tells a story about a certain workaholic type professional, who regularly went to the gym. One morning, he arrived in a down mood. When asked, “What’s wrong?”, he explained that the evening before he had a bad experience. He said it happened when he took the subway home. With all seats taken in the car, there was a twenty something young woman. Seeing this older gentleman, she immediately got up and gave him her seat. In his view, it was for him to give way to a lady, not the reverse. He then realized that people saw him as being elderly. That was a horrible shock!

QUESTION OF THE DAY*

My question of the day is: “At what age is someone considered a senior? I think that in this day and age, a person tends to live longer and work longer.  The age span in western countries, is much higher than it used to be.  Therefore what was ‘old’ a century ago is not necessarily ‘old’ today.  With the advancements in the medical field, people are living longer and healthier.  Also, people are better educated in what’s healthy for us and what causes bad health.  We’re on a “eat-healthy, keep-fit” faze.  I also think that genes have a lot to do with it of course.

CONCLUSION

We weren’t born yesterday. But that should not mean that we no longer have dreams, hope, joy and quality of life.

Personal Comments

I say:

  • That Gerontologists now like to classify old age into three periods:
    • At 65 to 75, a person is considered ‘young old’;
    • From 75 to 85, one is called the ‘old’; and
    • From 85 to 95, a person is referred to as ‘old old’.
  • That the division of old age into three periods highlights the reality that old age can conceivably extend for thirty years, from age 65 to 895.  Over that is a million dollar bonus.
  • That younger individuals often look upon retirement as a homogenous age period;  that is, everyone over the age of 65 is about the same.  This is inaccurate.
  • That over this potential 30-year plus span, the wants and needs of the older individual will change. As an example, their housing needs will change.

The Point

Age is only a number. We all need to keep that in perspective.

As far as I’m concerned, every day is a day for seniors, in celebration of them as people, for who they are, for the life which they are living, for the contribution having been made to their country, province or state, community and especially to their loved ones. Bravo.

PARTING LINE OR TWO TO REMEMBER*

TWO – “IT WORDS FOR ME!*” Senior day or senior night” Old age”;

Senior day or senior night (depending on the time the game is held) is a term used in college sports, most notably football and basketball, to describe the team’s last home game of the season. At some point before or after the game or at halftime, a ceremony is held bidding the team’s seniors farewell, as it is their last game in front of their home fans. Old age consists of ages nearing or surpassing the average life span of human beings, and thus the end of the human life cycle. (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia)-  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_age)

WOMEN ASK MEN OUT / LADY ASK A GUY OUT: I answer the question: “Why don’t women make the first move?*

Vol. 3, No.41, Saturday, January 26, 2013

TITLE: “WOMEN ASK MEN OUT / LADY ASK A GUY OUT I answer the question: “Why don’t women make the first move?*”

INTRODUCTION

Feb. 14th is just around the corner. Of course, that’s Valentine`s Day. I have been thinking about that question that has confounded women and girls for years: What if he does not make the move, should I? In the past, Rule #1 was for a lady to wait for a man to ask her to dance or go on a date. But, today’s woman (and girl) has options. Personally, I have refrained from doing so, but I have stories and thoughts. Thus, it’s certainly something to think about. And there is still time to take the lead and ask out that certain fellow you have been eyeing. If you do it before Valentine`s Day … who knows?

My topic is then about women making the first move. And the book of the week is Screw Cupid: The Sassy Girl’s Guide to Picking Up Hot Guys” [Paperback] by Samantha Scholfield (Author). So the immediate question is: Will you continue reading this post?” I think it’s your next best move. (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on dating, relationships and marriage.)

ANTOINETTE’S LIFE & TIMES*

There is a singles’ association which holds many events. A number of years ago when I was single, I used to regularly attend the Saturday Night dances.  During a typical evening, they usually announced “Lady’s Choice”.  That’s when a woman can ask a man to dance.  It was very popular. But, I still waited to be asked by a gentleman.

Should a woman make the first move?  Yes, why not! Although I approve, I couldn’t bring myself to do so. But, here’s some real life stories.

#1. Ms AAA: She was a friend of mine. There was a certain man and she was interested in him in a romantic way. They had been friends for awhile. While showing an interest in her, he never made the move.  One day she gave him an ultimatum: Either start a relationship or go their separate ways.  The result was they started seeing each other and a wonderful relationship blossomed. It worked!

#2. Ms BBB: She was a young lady who I knew. She liked a certain young man. She got tired waiting. Finally, she initiated a relationship. And today, they’re happily married. Here again, it worked.

#3. Ms CCC: This was a story related by a friend. There was a smart young man going to university. His aim was medical school. He had many good qualities: soft-spoken, intelligent, hard working, nice guy all around. He showed much potential, but he was somewhat of a book type and very shy. And there was a young woman just as smart; she was very interested in this fellow.  She pursued him, making move after move.  He got hooked. He got his M.D.; and she got her Mrs. He became a very successful doctor and they have been happily married for many years. Thus, she took a chance and it worked for her; it also worked for him. And in this case as well, the lady got her man!

Awkward: A Survival Guide for When All You Can Do is Cringe by Samantha Scholfield (Jun 1 2011)

THE BOOK:  Screw Cupid: The Sassy Girl’s Guide to Picking Up Hot Guys [Paperback] by Samantha Scholfield (Author)

Scholfield is liberated enough to pick up guys. She personifies the SASSY GIRL. She has techniques and strategies, which she developed following extensive trial and error and by speaking with many women and even some men. By using the expression, “Screw Cupid”, she rejects the old ways. This young woman will not wait for the young man to come a calling. She’s her own woman. If you are of like mind, you should read her book. It’s a “how- to” manual to get your man. It explains the way to initiate a conversation wherever you may be, make the connection and score a date. The beauty is her approach is that the guy will not realize he’s not the pursuer.

CONCLUSION

Most people, both men and women, want to find love. Many want a relationship and commitment, marriage and children, the white picket fence and living happily ever after. If single, with nothing now happening, then what? Should a woman take the lead and ask a hot guy for a date? That is the million-dollar question.

Personal Comments

  • For years, men have been the pursuers.  But times are changing. Men today are not as thick-skinned as they once were. For many, their fear of rejection is so huge, they’re stuck being wall flowers.
  • Many men, especially if shy and less confident, will make advances ONLY if the woman gives a signal of interest.  I often hear a male friend say, “I will ask the question only when I know what the answer will be.”
  • Women have options today.
  • A number of women today are becoming pursuers.  I guess it has to do with their having their own income and being confident and independent.
  • True, it takes courage to make the first move.  But what’s the worst that could happen … the person could say “NO”.  Rejection is something nobody wants to experience, but you will live and get over it. But, if it works out, you’ll say it was worth it.
  • Although men do enjoy the thrill of the chase; but in many cases, they are flattered when a woman makes advances and initiates a connection or possibly a relationship.
  • It’s true that someone has to break that barrier, but it really doesn’t matter who.
  • To that million-dollar question, I answer: “ … Without a doubt, most definitely … maybe!”

The Point

Many of us gals want a guy of our own. If it hasn’t happened the old fashioned way, what to do? Some believe that if opportunity doesn’t come knocking, they should go knocking. I say if it’s you … then knock away!

ANTOINETTE’S TIP SHEET*

  1. Keep it subtle and nuanced, when it comes to flirting;
  2. Keep it casual, once he shows interest – never appear too eager or desperate;
  3. Start a conversation about general topics;
  4. Ask him about himself, not yet personal, just interests and sports;
  5. Suggest to meet at a coffee house, if a co-worker, to discuss a project or to discuss the draft document;
  6. Offer a slice of home-cooked pie or cake. He probably loves to eat or he lives to eat (foodie). Either way, propose a cooking class at the supermarket or wherever;
  7. Tell him about a book you are reading. If also a reader, tell him about a book event at the bookstore, ask him if there is any interest;
  8. Inform him about a sports event coming up, saying you’d love to go, but the tickets are sold in twos;
  9. Say you need help buying telephone or computer.  Ask him if he could come with you to the store so you can choose the right one. Once there, say: “Let’s go for coffee.”
  10. Ask him along with others on an outing … something of a mutual interest; once there, be   attentive to him, sitting beside him.

It’s your move…………. I hope you make it – your love life may be changed for the better!

And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours?*

TWO – “IT WORDS FOR ME!*” ” Courting”; “Dating”

Courtship is the period in a couple’s relationship which precedes their engagement and marriage, or establishment of an agreed relationship of a more enduring kind.

(Source:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)

Dating is a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by two people with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia)-  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dating)

THREE– STUDY/STATISTICS:

Courtship is used by a number of theorists to explain gendering processes and sexual identity. Scientific research into courtship began in the 1980s after which time academic researchers started to generate theories about modern dating practices and norms. Both Moore and Perper found that, contrary to popular beliefs, courtship is normally triggered and controlled by women,[3][4] driven mainly by non-verbal behaviours to which men respond.

This is generally supported by other theorists who specialise in the study of body language.[5] There are some feminist scholars, however, who regard courtship as a socially constructed (and male-led) process organised to subjugate women.[6][7] Farrell reports, for example, that magazines about marriage and romantic fiction continue to attract a 98% female readership.[8] Systematic research into courtship processes inside the workplace[9][10] as well two 10-year studies examining norms in different international settings[11][12] continue to support a view that courtship is a social process that socialises both sexes into accepting forms of relationship that maximise the chances of successfully raising children. Whilst this may negatively impact women, particularly those seeking independence and equality at work,[13][14] it is argued that the majority of negative impacts accrue to men in the form of shorter life-expectancy, higher rates of suicide, alcoholism, homelessness and imprisonment.[15][16]

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#1: Tips for singles on Valentine’s Day

“Valentine’s Day can conjure up feelings of loneliness for those without a mate. But being alone is cheaper, easier, and probably better than going out on some random date, or being with a person you’ve been meaning to break up with for months. If you don’t have a date, don’t stay at home and pout. Here are some ideas to help you celebrate the day of love:

1. Realize that Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday. It is not about love and relationships; it is about selling flowers, candy, and diamond jewelry. Think of all the money you are saving.

2. Plan well in advance to do something that will not place you in the path of cooing couples. Even if you usually like dining out alone, do something else on Valentine’s Day.

3. Resist the temptation to turn off your phone and crawl into bed early. Book a deep tissue massage at a fantastic spa, followed by a manicure and pedicure. Host a fondue party or a potluck at your house, or grab a few single friends and book a sightseeing flight over your city.

4. Do you know a couple with children who never go out because they just don’t feel they can afford a babysitter? Offer them a free night of babysitting and let them enjoy a romantic night out.

5. Nothing spreads the love faster than doing a little volunteer work. Take time to remember your good fortune and learn about how you can help improve the lives of children living in poverty through a non-profit organization like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca).

6. If you are single, but would rather not be, think about what is standing in the way of you and a new relationship. Find ways to work on becoming the person your dream partner would fall in love with. Start therapy. Take up yoga. Take action to change the world. It is into the fullest lives that love is most likely to fall.” www.newscanada.com

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#2: Give roses as a symbol of love and peace

“Photo 1 credit: Paul Thompson; Photo 1 caption: Jenni Williams, a Zimbabwean human rights defender and leader of Women of Zimbabwe Arise, offers a rose to Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada. Jenni was in Canada to speak about the critical human rights situation in Zimbabwe.

Photo 2 credit: Paul Thompson; Photo 2 caption: Zimbabwean human rights defender Jenni Williams inspired delegates at an Amnesty International meeting in Montreal.

This Valentine’s Day, courageous women in Zimbabwe will be handing out paper roses in the streets.

Jenni Williams, the leader of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), has lost count of how many times she has been arrested maybe 37 or 38, she says. Jenni and her colleague, Magodonga Mahlangu, are only two of the many women who have been arrested, ill-treated, intimidated and harassed for their peaceful human rights work in this southern African country.

Members often give out paper roses during their peaceful marches to symbolize their slogan of love and peace. At a previous Valentine’s Day event in Bulawayo, banners proclaimed The Power of Love can conquer the Love of Power and women handed out roses to the public. Three of the 53 women arrested had simply been watching. At trial, the prosecutor decided against legal action, and the activists walked free after paying fines.

WOZA was formed in 2003 to defend human rights amidst the political violence in Zimbabwe, and continues their work today by mobilizing to improve living conditions in the country.

Members organize vocal and colourful peaceful demonstrations to protest government policies that lead to worsening social, economic and human rights situations. Police arrest even children, women carrying babies and pregnant women. Officers release many without charge, but take advantage of repressive legislation such as the Public Order and Security Act and the Miscellaneous Offences Act to charge some of them.

The government, in an effort to prevent public protest and criticism of its policies, has become increasingly intolerant of the work of human rights defenders and is actively seeking to silence them. WOZA members will continue by peaceful means to use their freedom to meet together and criticize government policy. Members of Amnesty International around the world are calling for the protection of WOZA members and all human rights defenders in Zimbabwe. Information on how to get involved is available at amnesty.ca/zimbabwe.” www.newscanada.com

INFLUENZA – FLU: Symptoms, shot, relief, etc., I give you my motherly advice…no guilt!*

Vol. 3, No. 40, Monday, January 21st, 2013

TITLE: “INFLUENZA – FLU: Symptoms, shot, relief, etc., I give you my motherly advice … no guilt!*

INTRODUCTION

Uggh Oh gazoontite … now that it’s January, the cold, flu and infection season is now upon us. It’s particularly tough on the children and their parents. For mothers & fathers everywhere, it’s care giving of the fever, cough and throat kind. You guessed it – today’s topic is the flu. In this post, I will give you some information, suggestions and a few statistics.  I will also consider the pros and cons of getting a flu shot. My Book of the Week is: “Women’s Health, a Primary Care Clinical Guide,” (Third Edition) by Ellis Quinn Youngkin, PhD, RNC, ARNP & Marcia Szmania Davis, MS, MSED, RNC, WHCNP, ANP. Please continue reading. Don’t worry, I have plenty of tissues. (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on health.)

ANTOINETTE’S LIFE & TIMES*

The flu is problematic for me as I am asthmatic – it could become worse for me. I am in the habit of washing my hands often. It contributes to an elimination of viruses along with germs and bacteria. In some past years, I received a flu shot. However, I can only report that when I did get a shot, I remember still getting sick.

Winter 2011–2012:. In 2011-2012, I got a flu shot. However, I also remember being queasy.

Winter 2012-2013: In North America, regarding the flu, the winter season has been the worst by far.  Viruses along with germs and bacteria are everywhere. Apparently, the rate of flu this year was 35 times worse than the previous year. The Mayor of Boston, Mass., USA even called a medical emergency due to the overwhelming outbreak in January 2013.

Motherhood: This brings to mind a little story. One Christmas Eve, my daughter, then three, was sick with the flu.  I was worried. When I called her pediatrician, the receptionist told me that he had taken the day off. You can appreciate that I was then on my way to frantic.  But she said that she would see what she could do. In five minutes, she called back, saying that the doctor would come in especially for my daughter. I was so very relieved and grateful. This is what I call a devoted doctor.

Grand Motherhood: This past Christmas, my grandchildren were sick with the flu. My granddaughter ended up with pneumonia. We were all concerned – but all turned out alright following visits to the clinic and spoonfuls of medicine. Along the way, my grandson had a reaction due to an allergy to antibiotics. It was sad that the children didn’t enjoy the holiday very much this year.

FACTS – NO BALONY

The word, “flu”, is short for influenza.

“Ìnfluenza, an acute, usually self-limiting, upper respiratory infection, may be caused by influenza A, B, or C virus. Strains of the A virus are the most common and most virulent. B virus infection has some increased association with Reye’s syndrome. C virus infection is a mild illness, usually not significant or identified clinically.”  (Source:  Pg. 797-798 of my Book of the Week)

Symptoms: Here are a few. Subjective: headache, myalgias, especially in the legs and back, fever often to  102 F to 104 F for three to four days, nonproductive cough, watery eyes, dry throat; and Objective: appearing flushed and sweating . (Source: Pg. 799 of my Book of the Week)

“Influenza Trivalent Vaccine: The high risk groups for whom annual administration of vaccine is currently recommended are persons with congenital or acquired heart disease, chronic lung disease, chronic renal disease, chronic severe anemia, and immunocompromising illness (diabetes, cancer). Others for whom the vaccine is indicated are persons over 60, those living in chronic care/nursing homes, family members of high risk groups and health care workers.” (Source: Pg. 801 of my Book of the Week)

THE AUTHOR: Ellis Quinn Youngkin, PhD, RNC, ARNP & Marcia Szmania Davis, MS, MSED, RNC, WHCNP, ANP.

Ellis Quinn Youngkin, PhD, RNC, ARNP:  He is a Professor and Associate Dean, Christine E. Lyon College of Nursing, Women`s Health Care Nurse Practitioner, University Student Health Services, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida.

SERIES/COLLECTION

THE BOOK: “Women’s Health, a Primary Care Clinical Guide,” (Third Edition) by Ellis Quinn Youngkin, PhD, RNC, ARNP & Marcia Szmania Davis, MS, MSED, RNC, WHCNP, ANP.

This book deals with women`s health from adolescent health through to seniors. The four sections are:1) Women, Health, and the Health Care System; 2) Promotion of Gynecologic Health Care; 3) Promotion of Women’s Health Care During Pregnancy; and  4) Primary Care Conditions Affecting Women’s Health. (N.B. And yes, it does cover influenza.) This information is comprehensive, detailed and well organized. Included is material dealing with pregnancy issues, frequently encountered medical problems, effects of societal, economic, political factors, etc. This has made it a best-seller. The latest edition is better – it has revised and updated content including the latest on hormone replacement therapy along with a  new chapter on complimentary therapies in women`s health. This is a must-have book for all mothers– it’s a keeper for life and beyond by passing it on to your daughter! That`s what I intend to do. But since I have two, I might have to cut it in half. What else can I do? Do you have a better idea?

CONCLUSION

You need to pay attention to Influenza (the flu). It is potentially a problem every year.

Personal Comments

I say:

  1. That instead of the word, “flu”, my Mom always used the word, “influenza”.
  2. That during the winter, fresh air is limited because of the cold temperatures. We tend to hibernate in the winter.
  3.  That to avoid the flu, I suggest sleep & rest, eating healthy, plenty of vitamin C and often washing your hands.
  4. That there are pros and cons to the flu shot.  Doctors think it works. But I have seen that a flu shot does not guarantee that you won’t get the flu.  And some people don’t like the idea of having injections of bad stuff. So what to do? You decide!

The Point

Staying in good health and getting better when sick is job #1. When it comes to influenza (the flu), you need to take it seriously– it’s that important!

ANTOINETTE’S TIP SHEET*

Everyone should:

  1. Reduce the risk of catching the flu. To do so, try to

(a)    Get enough sleep and rest;

(b)   Wash your hands often;

(c)    Use a hand sanitizer;

(d)   Eat healthy;

(e)    Get plenty of vitamin C;

(f)     Get the flu shot … especially if in a high risk group;

(g)    Strengthen your immune system by exercising, going for a walk, winter sports, etc.;

(h)    Wash down your phones, computer keys, door knobs, etc. with alcohol wipes;

2. Take yourself to a doctor or clinic sooner, rather than later, for a physical examination;

3. Take a sick day or two; if you have the flu (or a cold); this will help you get better and also protect co-workers;

4. Sneeze or cough into your elbow joint – the flu is contagious and passes through the  air;

Every parent should:

1. Reduce the risk of their child catching the flu. To do so, try to

(a)    Watch your child for signs of the flu:

(b)   Take your child to the pediatrician or clinic sooner, rather than later, for a physical examination;

(c)    Keep your child home from school if he/she has the flu or a cold; this will help your child get better and also protect other students;

PARTING LINE OR TWO TO REMEMBER

When I don`t feel good, with a cough and some fever, I reach for a tissue. Do you want one? I have plenty. I just opened a new box. Oh, by the way, I think I have discovered a new secret weapon. Against the flu bug, I might try something else … wait for it … a fly swatter. Who knows, nothing else seems to work!*

And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours?*

And there is time to take the lead and ask out that certain fellow you have been eyeing. If you do it before Valentine`s Day, who knows?  (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on dating, relationships and marriage.)

PREVIEW (tentatively scheduled for February 4th 2013): Feb. 14th is just around the corner. Of course, it’s Valentine`s Day; it’s also the lesser known S.A.D. day (Single Awareness Day). I was not aware of it– I presume that many of you out there in Internetland also don’t know much about it. I looked into it. Let me tell you what I have discovered. I also will share my thoughts on “singleness”. And by the way, S.A.D. is not contagious. (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on dating, relationships and marriage.)

TWO – “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”
For today, my word/phrase(s) is/are: “influenza”, Infection”; etc.

“Influenza, commonly known as the ‘flu’ , is an infectious disease of birds and mammals caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae, the influenza viruses.” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza

“Infection is the invasion of a host organism’s bodily tissues by disease-causing organisms, their multiplication, and the reaction of host tissues to these organisms and the toxins they produce.[1](Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infection

THREE– STUDY/STATISTICS:

“The most common symptoms are chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, headache (often severe), coughing, weakness/fatigue and general discomfort.[1]

Flu can occasionally lead to pneumonia, either direct viral pneumonia or secondary bacterial pneumonia, even for persons who are usually very healthy.[4][5][6] In particular it is a warning sign if a child (or presumably an adult) seems to be getting better and then relapses with a high fever as this relapse may be bacterial pneumonia.[7]

Typically, influenza is transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes, creating aerosols containing the virus. Influenza can also be transmitted by direct contact with bird droppings or nasal secretions, or through contact with contaminated surfaces.

Influenza spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in about three to five million yearly cases of severe illness and about 250,000 to 500,000 yearly deaths,[12] rising to millions in some pandemic years.

Vaccinations against influenza are usually made available to people in developed countries.[15]

Symptoms of influenza may include:

The influenza vaccine is recommended by the World Health Organization and United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention for high-risk groups, such as children, the elderly, health care workers, and people who have chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or are immuno-compromised among others.[90][91] (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza)

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#2: Recognizing a cold versus the flu

“Cold and flu are often categorized together but the truth is they are different. Know the difference and assess your symptoms to best identify your illness and treat accordingly.

The main difference is that a cold is a mild infection of your nose and throat, whereas the flu is an infection of the airways and lungs.

According to Health Canada, common flu symptoms may include: cough, fever, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, headache, reduced appetite, runny nose and sometimes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms of a cold include runny nose, sneezing, cough and sore throat. With a cold, headache, fever, muscle aches or nausea are not common and good indicators that you likely have the flu.

Help deal with cold and flu by following these tips:

Get a flu shot

Keep Kleenex brand tissues handy for coughs and sneezes to help keep stuff off hands

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

Wash hands often with soap

Keep commonly shared objects clean

If you are sick, stay home

Maintain a healthy lifestyle.” www.newscanada.com

SELF DISCIPLINE: I see it as the key to your success, today & tomorrow*

Vol. 3, No.39, Monday, January 14th, 2013

TITLE: “SELF DISCIPLINE: I see it as the key to your success, today & tomorrow*

INTRODUCTION

I was at the gym awhile back and a fellow was explaining to a young woman (a newbee at weights and workout machines) that discipline was essential if you want to get fit and in shape. It got me to thinking about (self) discipline to being the key to success whatever the pursuit. Now that we’re in the New Year resolution season, this seemed a great topic.

At this time of the year, renewing oneself and making improvements are on the minds of many. Typical desires include: eating healthy, getting leaner and fit and becoming debt free.The key to making progress is willpower. It is more correctly called self discipline. In this post, I will give you a definition of self discipline, its effect and how you can embrace it. Therefore, my book of the week is: “No Excuses!: The Power Of Self-Discipline for Success in Your Life” by Brian Tracy. P.S. As you can see I DID stay disciplined enough to write this piece! Now if you have the willpower to continue reading, I think you’ll be one step closer to the new and better you. (Editor’s Note: This is another in the continuing series on general issues.)

ANTOINETTE’S LIFE & TIMES*

After the Christmas holidays, losing weight, going to a gym and clearing my Christmas debts are all on my to-do list.  Eating healthy takes effort. Avoiding useless calorie foods, that taste good, takes even greater effort. Self discipline helps me here as well. Controlling my food intake keeps the weight down … again self discipline can be credited for this. Going to a gym four or five times a week is difficult and finding the time is also a problem, Self discipline will help me get there and keep it up. When it comes to clearing my debts, I try to manage with what I have and look for sales and bargains. I attribute a debt reduction also to self discipline.

Having self discipline gives me control of my life.  It gives me the motivation that I need.  When I set my mind on achieving something, I strive to get there. Accomplishing my goals gives me a feeling of happiness.  I say that‘s it’s worth the effort!

Self discipline is a very positive attribute. On a job application, wouldn’t you like to describe yourself as self disciplined? If so, check out this book. It’s now your move.

CONCLUSION

Self discipline is the key to a better you and a better life. Are you not worth it?

Personal Comments

  • Self discipline is a very important ability. It’s a necessity if you want to achieve your goals. It’s also the path to success. With it, you can accomplish almost anything in life. Having this skill is to improve your quality of life.
  • Self discipline can be a learned ability. You could say, it’s a job to acquire self discipline. It’s also hard work to stick to a goal and see it through.
  • Once you are skilled in using self discipline, you are no longer a prisoner of your weakness. You have inner strength and that brings self esteem.
  • Self discipline is not restrictive of your lifestyle. Instead, it becomes a way of life.
  • Self Discipline:
    • Encourages you to strive for success;
    • Gives you the means to overcome laziness and procrastination;
    • Builds inner strength and heightens motivation;
    • Motivates you to set goals like sticking to a diet, eating healthy foods, going to a gym, doing activities, reading a book, etc.;
    • Helps you to see your goals all the way through;
    • Brings on perseverance, strength and persistence;
    • Enables big effort and hard work; and
    • Gives you the ability to succeed with your goals.

The Point

You can be a person with self discipline. Just try. Take it slow … one step at a time.

ANTOINETTE’S TIP SHEET*

  1. Research the topic of self discipline and learn what it takes;
  2. Decide that laziness and desire for immediate gratification will not win with you … ever again;
  3. Do not put off today what needs to be done;
  4. Say that you are the master of you and your life and mean it;
  5. Set goals – start with little ones at first … of the easy kind like not making an unplanned purchase today or snacking before bed;
  6. Promise yourself a little reward – something you like and want like a movie view or an ice cream cone;
  7. Steel yourself to achieve these early goals;
  8. See it through and get it done;
  9. Take these little victories and set another goal or two – now a bit higher … of the harder kind and repeat the process;
  10. See it through and get it done;
  11. Take these greater victories and set another goal or two – now even higher and more long term, requiring greater effort and time and repeat the process;
  12. See it through and get it done;
  13. Realize that you are truly the master of you and your life – recognize that the sky is now the limit!

Congratulations for reading this right through. I knew you could do it. Now, please do start on having self discipline without delay!*

And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours?*

TWO – “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”
For today, my word/phrase(s) are: “self-discipline”; “self-control”

Self-discipline

“Self-discipline can be defined as the ability to motivate oneself in spite of a negative emotional state. Qualities associated with self-discipline include willpower, hard work, and persistence.”(Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline#Self-discipline)

Self-control

“Self-control is the ability to control one’s emotions, behavior, and desires in order to obtain some reward, or avoid some punishment.” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-control)

THREE – STUDY/STATISTICS:

“Self-discipline is the product of persisted willpower. Whereas willpower is the strength and ability to carryout a certain task, self-discipline is the ability to use it routinely and even automatically (as if through reflex). An analogy for the relationship between the two might be defined as follows: Where willpower is the muscle, self-discipline is the structured thought that controls that muscle. In most cultures, it has been noted that self-discipline is the ultimate path towards success.[citation needed ‘” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline#Self-discipline)

“Self-control is the ability to control one’s emotions, behavior, and desires in order to obtain some reward, or avoid some punishment. Presumably, some (smaller) reward or punishment is operating in the short term which precludes, or reduces, the later reward or punishment. In psychology it is sometimes called self-regulation. Exerting self-control through the executive functions in decision making is held in some theories to deplete one’s ability to do so in the future.[1] ””(Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) –http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-control)

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#1: Teach financial discipline in your household

“Whether it’s welcoming home your adult child after graduation day or helping them pay off their credit card, parents feel the need to help their grown kids financially well into adulthood, which coupled with mortgage payments, retirement savings, and even elder care, can put a strain on anyone’s finances.

High youth unemployment and increasing post-secondary education costs means many young people are more likely to rely financially on their parents well into adulthood, says John Tracy, a senior vice president at TD Canada Trust. As a parent, you want to help if your children are struggling financially, but it’s important your support does not compromise your own financial stability and retirement savings goals.

Tracy provides his advice on how boomer parents can practice tough love when it comes to family finances:

Get a plan and budget accordingly Visit a financial advisor to develop a plan. With this plan in place, you will know how much you need to save every week to help achieve your dream retirement. Refer to your plan before lending a financial hand to your children. Remember, your kids have decades left in the workforce to earn money, but you likely do not.

Pay yourself first It’s vital that you prioritize retirement savings in your peak earning years, so you have enough saved to help live the lifestyle you want when you retire. Remember, if you can’t support yourself in retirement, then you risk shifting the financial strain onto your children instead. To make saving easier, consider automating your savings with a regular, pre-authorized transfer into your RSP.

Have open and honest conversations It can be difficult talking about money, but it’s harder if you avoid it. Don’t assume that you are on the same page as your adult children. Be clear on what you are and are not willing to support financially. For example, if your child has moved back home, will they be responsible for paying rent or covering any household expenses?

Be a role model Gradually shift your role from financial aid to financial coach. Help your kids establish a plan to get their expenses under control and pay down debts to take some of the financial strain off of you.”  www.newscanada.com

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#2: How to motivate yourself at college and university

“Your college years can be some of the best times of your life. The freedom of not having anyone to answer to combined with the flexibility of arranging your own schedule means you may get to sleep in more and stay out ’til the wee hours of the morning. But this period in your life isn’t supposed to last forever. Here are some tips on how to stay on track and keep motivated:

Stick with the right crowd. You may have learned this lesson already in high school, but it becomes even more important to surround yourself with positive influences in your college years. Find friends who equally balance work and play.

Know your limits. Enrolling in an advanced course because it interests you can be a great way to challenge yourself, but if you feel overwhelmed and miserable it may be time to revisit your plans. College is a great time to discover who you are and how much you can handle. Just don’t overextend yourself and ask for help if you need it.

Value your education. It’s a privilege to attend college and – for most children and families in developing countries it’s a distant dream. International development organization like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca) can help you make a difference in the life of a child living in extreme poverty through education Consider investing in someone’s future as you are investing in your own.” www.newscanada.com

Vol. 3,  No. 38, January 7th, 2013

TITLE: “New Year’s Resolutions: I have some statistics and ideas to SUCCEED – here’s my list!*”(Update 2013)

INTRODUCTION

This week, I will present my annual post on New Year’s resolutions along with an update.  I am pleased that you came by to take a look? Who knows, it might give you a boost for a change for the better? My topic is succeeding at New Year’s resolutions. My book of the week still is: “Resolutions That Work: How to make & keep New Years resolutions” [Paperback] by Serge Prengel.  My bonus book for this week is: ”The Art of The Fresh Start: How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for a Lifetime”  [Paperback] by Glenna Salsbury (Author)

ANTOINETTE’S LIFE & TIMES*

New Year’s resolutions work for me. I make a resolution; and I figure out how to achieve it.

Years past

One year, then newly alone, I was VERY determined to start a social life. I needed to find single acquaintances.  I called a few people and started the ball rolling.  And in a short while, I had a whole new group of unmarried friends.

Another year, my resolution was to eat properly and be fit.  My mother’s poor health made me realize how precious good health really is.  Eating properly is the starting point. I became more conscious of food groups, vitamins and also calcium especially for women. I paid attention to low fat and protein content. Healthier meals were the result. Being active is just as necessary.

UPDATE – January 7TH, 2013

This year, my resolution is to have balance in my life.  I know how hard and long I work. But, as I get older, I recognize that it’s important to enjoy life as well. I need to find time to do the things that I truly enjoy. I also want to make my dreams happen. The worst thing that could happen is to wake up one day and realize that it’s too late, finding that I’m too old and not well enough to do what I’ve truly wanted. It seems that many people fall into that trap. I now say: “Let’s go!*”

THE BOOK: “Resolutions That Work: How to make & keep new years resolutions” [Paperback] by Serge Prengel
This book is VERY short and sweet. The author is a man of a few words, but he makes do with less. He recognizes the internal conflict between the old you and the new you. He is very efficient in the communication of his three principles. According to him, embrace his program and you will get to the promised land of a better you and a better life.

BONUS BOOK: “The Art of The Fresh Start: How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for a Lifetime” [Paperback] by Glenna Salsbury (Author)

SERIES/COLLECTION

Her books include:

THE BONUS BOOK: “The Art of The Fresh Start: How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for a Lifetime” [Paperback] by Glenna Salsbury (Author)
Your life is a ‘masterpiece’ and you are the artist who can make it the beautiful piece of work that it can be.  Her simple truth is that you’re not going to change if you don’t want to change. Said another way, if you don’t dream of the change and it is not perceived as something of an added value, it won’t happen.  She has an approach. She explains it. She intends that you have the tools to achieve true realizable change. Insight into your value system is key and motivation is an important factor. This book can be part of the solution. Pick it up if you dare.

CONCLUSION:

It is usual for one to want to improve oneself and one’s life. However, it is noteworthy when one really tries to do it. And it is exceptional when someone actually accomplishes it.

My Personal Comments

I desire to better myself as a person and improve my life. On January 1st, like most people, I set some goals and make New Year’s resolutions. I know that if I set my sights too high, I might not get there. I also confess that I don’t always follow through. Although I may not reach my goals, I still achieve something. In any event, I also subscribe to the credo of a good friend who says, “Aim for the stars and hit the sky!*”

In my view, making New Year’s resolutions is a great custom.  With this exercise, one gains, not only the betterment, but also, an overall positive feeling of self empowerment and satisfaction. As a further bonus, one may have some fun while getting there.

It might even change your life. And you could also become a better person.

 The Point
A personal renewal project is a perfect perennial. Everyone should take advantage of the opportunity. It pays dividends. Let’s do it! Here are some how-to suggestions.

ANTOINETTE’S TIP SHEET*
A person wishing to make and accomplish a successful resolution should:
1. Examine the past year and try to figure out:
(a) “What could have gone better?”
(b) “What is causing you dissatisfaction?”
(c) “What quality being exhibited is holding you back?”
(d) “What new skill set may propel you to the next level?”
2. Leave behind any negativity that might be felt- don’t beat yourself up; instead,
2.1 Forgive yourself;
2.2 Learn from the mistakes made and move on, all the while, ensuring that you do NOT repeat the same errors;
3. Start the New Year on a positive note, striving for more;
4.Enunciate goals for the coming year and to this end;
4.1 Choose a subject area (see the above Heading, “Popular New Year’s resolutions”, for examples.) – remember you cannot do it all and you have to start somewhere;
4.2 Prioritize – determine what area is more important to your overall success and focus on that!
4.3 Address a particular aspect, be it small or big; then, aim to correct it;
4.4 Be reasonable in your expectations, in this regard;
4.4.1 Recognize that what you set as your goal will impact upon whether you fail and the extent achieved;
4.4.2 Don’t start what you do not intend to finish;
4.5 Strive to make progress gradually – don’t try to do it ‘cold turkey’ … all at once!
4.6 Tell family members about your ambitions – they will be your ardent fans… more importantly, they will be a built-in support group;
5. Make an action plan to achieve each sub-resolution – this means a timeline for each ‘baby step’;
6. Set small goals that are attainable – break the goals down into small quantifiable ‘baby steps’; this is key to your rate of success; making each into realistic sub-resolutions; (say, for example, if you want to read 10 books, make each book a sub- resolution.);
7. Be kind to yourself; more precisely,
7.1 Forgive your indiscretions on route to the achievement of your ‘baby steps;
7.2 Reward yourself with a small treat after accomplishing each sub-resolution; this is essential in providing immediate gratification and encouraging you to look to the next sub-resolution;
8. Be conscious of the power of attitude; whatever you do,
8.1 Go into this with the right frame of mind:  you will get it done, no excuses;
8.2 Do this with gusto – never take a “whatever-will-be … will-be” approach; this spells certain defeat;
8.3 Understand the word, “persistence” –  show it!
9. Aim for the finish line; and when it is in view,
9.1 Steel your resolve;
9.2 Look into yourself for that additional effort and boost of adrenalin to push you across to victory;

 Cheers – In the new year, please have the new you call the new me and we’ll do lunch.*
And that’s my thought of the week on books, what’s yours?*

ONE A – HERE’S AN ANECDOTE:

S & R* CHOICE ANECDOTE #1: Resolution
“One New Year’s day, while serving as State Department spokesperson, Bernard Kalb made a public resolution to be “candid, frank, useful and constructive”. Shortly thereafter, a reporter presented Kalb with his first question of the new year. His reply? “I have nothing that I can offer you on that.”(Source: Anecdotage)

S & R* CHOICE ANECDOTE #2: Biting Demands…
“On the eve of the Millennium, “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker made an unusual New Year’s resolution: to stop chewing on the inside of her own mouth – a nasty habit which often left her inner cheeks bitten, blistered and bloody. Did Parker keep her resolution? Alas, no. It “bit the dust” a mere 20 minutes into 2001.”(Source: Anecdotage)

S & R* CHOICE ANECDOTE #3: Dan Miller: New Year’s Resolution
“O-Town’s Dan Miller was once asked whether he had made any New Year’s resolutions. Yes, he replied: “To learn how to play bass… I set realistic resolutions. I’d never try something absurd, like giving up chocolate.”(Source: Anecdotage) –

ONE B– “I SHOULD HAVE SAID THAT!*” – QUOTES

S & R* QUOTE #1: Charles Dickens
“I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” (Source:  Wisdom Quotes) –  http://www.wisdomquotes.com/)

S & R* QUOTE #2: Ella Wheeler Wilcox
“When Christmas bells are swinging above the fields of snow,
We hear sweet voices ringing from lands of long ago,
And etched on vacant places
Are half-forgotten faces
Of friends we used to cherish, and loves we used to know.
“Christmas Fancies” – Poems of Power”

S & R* QUOTE #3: Pauline Kael
“Where there is a will, there is a way. If there is a chance in a million that you can do something, anything, to keep what you want from ending, do it. Pry the door open or, if need be, wedge your foot in that door and keep it open”. (Source:  Wisdom Quotes) –  http://www.wisdomquotes.com/)

TWO – “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”

 “IT WORDS FOR ME!*”
For today, my word/phrase(s) are:  “New Year’s Resolutions”, “commitment”, etc.

 New Year’s Resolutions
“New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year’s Day. Some examples include resolutions to donate to the poor more often, to become more assertive, or to become more environmentally responsible. There are religious parallels to this secular tradition. People may act similarly during the Christian fasting period of Lent, though the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility. During Judaism’s New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one’swrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year’s_resolution

Commitment
“Commitment means to show loyalty, duty or pledge to something or someone, and can refer to: Personal commitment, interaction dominated by obligations. These obligations may be mutual, or self-imposed, or explicitly stated, or may not. Distinction is often made between commitment as a member of an organization (such as a sporting team, a religion, or as an employee), and a personal commitment, which is often a pledge or promise to ones’ self for personal growth.” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commitment

THREE– STUDY/STATISTICS:

Bonus fact #1: Success rate
“Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set, such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.[3].” (Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year’s_resolution

Bonus fact #2: Top 5 resolutions by SlideShare survey
“For the year 2012, the top 5 resolutions, as identified by a SlideShare survey [4] are:
• Be financially-savvy
• Read at least one book per month
• Eat properly
• Get enough sleep
• Keep a journal of awesome moments”
(Source: Wikipedia the free encyclopedia) –  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year’s_resolution)

Bonus fact #3: What are the popular New Year’s resolutions?
“Here are several:
•Drink Less Alcohol
•Get a Better Education
•Get a Better Job
•Get Fit
•Lose Weight
•Manage Debt
•Manage Stress
•Quit Smoking Now
•Save Money
•Take a Trip
•Volunteer to Help Others”

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#1:  Keep finding little ways to brighten someone’s day
“(NC) It doesn’t need to be January 1 to make a resolution. Each year many of us resolve to do something that improves our lives. And the good news is that doing little things for others often creates big results for all of us. In 2012, specialists say, if you resolve to pay-it-forward and look for those instances that will brighten someone else’s day, it will brighten yours too. Helping out and doing acts of good can lift your spirits, which impacts your well-being and mood, and in turn, can positively impact those around you, says psychotherapist Kimberly Moffit. Think about a time when someone did something nice or unexpected for you. You probably felt pretty great, but so did the person doing the good deed.This should come easily to Canadians, she says, since we are known for being polite and kind. In fact, a recent survey commissioned by LG Electronics, indicates that more than 90 per cent of Canadians would be willing to give a complete stranger 20 minutes to help move appliances and home electronics. Armed with this information and knowing that life’s good moments come from good acts, LG took to the streets to capture Canadians ‘doing good through staged moving scenarios in cities across Canada. Actors struggled to move appliances and home electronics on their own and appealed for help from passers-by. The result: many of us helped out, reinforcing our Canada the good reputation. This experiment showed that even though we’re busy, Canadians are still willing to help, Moffit pointed out. Let’s continue this tradition of kindness and look for opportunities to brighten someone’s day all year round.” www.newscanada.com

S & R*NEWS ALERT*#2: Resolutions for life Seven simple steps to better health – By: Jane-Diane Fraser
“If you could add a decade or more of healthy years to your life, wouldn’t you grab the chance? The simple things can make the biggest difference, says
Heart and Stroke Foundation lecturer Dr. Clyde Yancy, adding that up to 80 per cent of premature heart disease is preventable.
Follow these seven simple steps to embrace your best health potential.
1. Get Active. Physical activity can be a lifesaver literally. Inactivity can shave almost four years off a person’s expected lifespan. People who are physically inactive are twice as likely to be at risk for heart disease or stroke.
2. Know and Control Cholesterol Levels. Almost 40 per cent of Canadian adults have high blood cholesterol. You can get your numbers on track by making healthy dietary changes, being active 30 to 60 minutes most days, achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight, and becoming tobacco-free.
3. Follow a Healthy Diet. Healthy eating is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health yet about half of Canadians don’t meet the healthy eating recommendations. The Foundation recommends that adults eat seven or more vegetables and fruit every day. Canadians can find healthy
eating tips and recipes at healthcheck.org.
4. Know and Control Blood Pressure. By knowing and controlling your blood pressure, you can cut your risk of stroke by up to 40 per cent and heart attack by up to 25 per cent.
5. Achieve and Maintain a Healthy Weight. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your heart health.
Being obese can reduce your life span by almost four years.
6. Manage Diabetes. By 2016 an estimated 2.4 million Canadians will live with diabetes. Diabetes increases the risk of high blood pressure, narrowing of the arteries, coronary artery disease, and stroke, particularly if your blood sugar levels are poorly controlled.
7. Be Tobacco-free. More than 37,000 Canadians die prematurely each year due to tobacco use, and almost 8,000 non-smokers die each year from exposure to second-hand smoke. As soon as you become tobacco-free, your risk of heart disease and stroke begins to decrease. After 15 years your risk will be nearly that of a non-smoker. Healthy living is key to preventing heart disease and stroke, says Bobbe Wood, president of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Foundation is committed to raising awareness about heart health and helping Canadians live longer, healthier lives. Canadians can take a personalized My Heart&Stroke Risk Assessment to find out how their age, family history, and medical conditions affect their heart health at heartandstroke.ca/risk.” www.newscanada.com
